I saw the most amazing musical on Saturday night: Urinetown. Its’ unconventional name intrigued me, and I purchased tickets immediately after reading the synopsis:
An epic tale of greed, corruption, love and revolution set in a time when water is worth its weight in gold.
The show is funny, witty, vulgar, super entertaining and I highly recommend you go watch it. I also loved St James Theatre, where it is currently showing. The theatre is small, providing a good view from any seat, which also allows for a more intimate experience.
There are lots of nuggets of wisdom to be gleaned from the Urinetown storyline-follow your heart, stand up for what you believe in, power to the people, do your research-are just a few of them.
For this blog post, however, I want to focus on one in particular. Without giving away too much of the plot, I can tell you that there’s a revolution, but not much thought went into the aftermath. The reason for the uprising is that:
The grass seemed greener on the other side.
Seems to be one of the main reasons why we all look to switch jobs, companies, or careers. Luckily, in your job search or next career move, you don’t have to rush into a revolutionary change. You have much more time to think, research and reflect on what the pastures will be like on the other side.
Is it really better on the other side?
It reminds me of a nugget of wisdom that was handed down to me by a successful Private Equity executive whilst I was job hunting a few years ago. He advised that looking for a new job was always a good thing, as it could result in you realising that your current situation is actually pretty good.
You need to stand at the top of the hill to see if the grass really is greener on the other side.
Bottom line: Do your research before you make the jump to the other side of the hill.
Oh, and don’t wait too long to buy tickets for Urinetown- it’s only running through 3 May!
